MyFitnessPal Security Breach]

On March 29, 2018, it was reported that data of more than 150 million users of a popular fitness and dietary app called MyFitnessPal have been hacked. Users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords were stolen. The company then started to notify their users about the situations via in-app messaging and emails days after they noticed that an unauthorized person had successfully accessed the data a month prior. The company then urged their users to immediately change their passwords. Unfortunately, it is still unclear who had orchestrated the data breach which stole the data of millions of users.

Under Armour, which is MyFitnessPal’s parent company, claimed that the users’ financial information were not affected by the breach of data in any way. As the company does not require any government issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers of social security numbers, the damage of the data breach is considered as moderate. Currently, the company is working on figuring out how the hackers had the ability to get into their system without being noticed.

And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen by a hacker may seem like it’s not much of a big deal, it still holds more power if you look at the bigger picture. For instance, the app has the ability to know the precise performance and location data of its users. Meaning, if someone else has access to a user’s account, they will be able to know where exactly a user is and how fast the user is going. The users will then be placed in potential danger and can be easily tracked by the person who has their data.

Getting Your Data Secured

This incident is an important reminder for everyone that any type of data can easily be hacked in this age of modern technology. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.

1. Using Complex Passwords

While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.

2. Reading Through the Terms and Services Conditions

While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is important for the users to know just what it is that the app can do.

While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
